Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Viral video advertisements

Though the 2011 motion picture "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" did not use any live chimpanzee actors in the film, Twentieth Century Fox aired several "viral videos" online which featured young chimpanzee actors.  In one, a young chimpanzee is displayed playing violent video games in a Japanese laboratory.  In another video, a young chimpanzee actor appears to get an automatic weapon from African soldiers in the jungle.


Castrol Oil

Castrol, a motor oil company owned by BP, purchased a thirty second ad for Castrol Edge to air during the first half of Super Bowl XLIII (February 1, 2009). The estimated cost for such length was $3.0 million. The commercial featured "grease monkeys" (chimpanzees) working on a car and ultimately making the vehicle's owner their king.

A commercial for the Samsung Solstice phone featured a chimpanzee playing guitar and interacting with Ozzy Osbourne.

Samsung has since withdrawn the commercial after receiving information from animal-rights groups about the use of great apes in advertising. Samsung, the world's largest electronics company, has also pledged not to use great apes in future advertising campaigns.

A commerical for the Seattle Mariners baseball team features a chimpanzee dressed as a businessman and working in the advertising department.

A chimpanzee "actor" was featured in an advertisement for this telecommunications company shown in movie theaters reminding patrons to turn off their cell phones.

After learning about the impacts of using great apes in advertising, the company agreed to stop using apes in future advertising campaigns.


QuitPlan

In this advertisement for Quitplan, a service that helps people quit smoking, several species of primates are shown hanging on people's backs and facilitating their smoking habit.  In addition to a capuchin and a baboon, a young chimpanzee holds a cigarette to a man's mouth as he takes a puff.

The chimpanzee "actor" credited in this commercial is Willie. In 2010, Willie and 9 other "actor" chimpanzees were retired from the entertainment industry and transferred to Houston Zoo.
